The Dark is Rising

26 Sep

I loved the Susan Cooper “Dark is Rising” series when I was growing up.  It went right up there with “The Chronicles of Prydain” and “The Chronicles of Narnia”.  I’m terribly afraid that I’ll be disappointed by this movie version of it though.

i’ve never read the book. It looks like an interesting book(looking at the front cover of the book) but the trailer isn’t really convicting me to see it in the theatres. And they changed the name from “the dark is rising” to “the seeker : the dark is rising” to “the seeker”. This could be a sign that it isn’t good( i wonder why they waited this late to change a movie title, i’ve never seen a movie to this before).

I agree — the trailer makes it too “pop-y”, and it’s hard to differentiate it from the other recent sci/fi fantasy movies. I think the movie is still going to have the “dark is rising” subtitle, but they are probably hoping to make a series of movies, based on the “Dark is Rising Sequence“, so they are calling the first “chapter” “The Seeker”.

Some quotes on the wikipedia description of the film adaptation suggest that the movie is quite unfaithful to the book.

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and one that at one point I’d hoped to write a screenplay for (wishful thinking, I know). Having seen the trailer a couple times now, I’m amazed that I’ve managed to not become violently ill. Explosions? A love interest? Superpowers? Screw you, Hollywood.

You should do the independent remake when this one bombs :-).
